Waiting for Bruce

July 31st, 2008

Wow, what a show! Watching Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band play was like taking a master’s course in music performance. At 58 years old, he’s never sounded better. The new record “Magic” is a wonderful body of work. I’m not thrilled with the production - I think the mix and mastering is a little quashed. But, make no bones about it, the songs are 5-star.

Springsteen played for 3 hours and 20 minutes with no break (except to step off before the 7 song encore). He barely even ever stopped between songs. There was an amazing mix of classics, new songs, b-sides and even some fun covers. I’ve been to 1-1/2 hour shows that were just wonderful, and at the end of the show I was ready to go home. But even after 3 hours, I was still pumped and having a great time.

There is something magical about seeing someone play who is just totally committed to the delivery of their songs. There is no separation, no fear, and no wall between them and the music. They are archetypes of inspiration; expressing themselves with complete passion in a way most of us are too fearful to do ourselves. I think that is a huge part of what turns a good songwriter into a great performer and entertainer. Whether that person is just starting out - Like Anthony Decosta, or is emerging as an icon - like Jim James of My Morning Jacket (who blew me away a few years ago in NYC), or has been doing it for over 30 years - like Bruce, it never gets old and it never ceases to give me goosebumps.

Many thanks to Chuck for getting the tickets, and to JJ for giving me the tickets meant for him, but he couldn’t use. Jen and I had a great night, and it will definitely stay with me for a long, long time.

Thanks for Listening
