Gathering My Songs

When my friend Glen (glenroethel.com) was finishing his record, I started listening to what he had accomplished and was awed. We talked for a while about the process, and I told him that I was getting ready to dive into a new studio record. His first advice: “Gather your songs”.
Now, that might seem pretty obvious. But, I take this as a very important step. There may be a nice handful of tunes out there for me to work with, but only some of them will ultimately work together as a group on a record. So, today I gathered my songs and started playing them into a small recorder. I’ll be doing this over and over again every day until I get into the studio in mid January. Until then, I will be really tightening up my performances and listening to the songs for production ideas.
